The project involved the design of the Ukrainian Holodomor Memorial including a sculpture, a bench and hardscaped area to commemorate the 1930’s famine/genocide in Ukraine. GeoCapitol drilled two test borings to evaluate the subsurface conditions. In order to complete the soil test borings, GeoCapitol had to provide extensive coordination due to the presence of pedestrians, as well as obtain the drilling permit required by the District of Columbia. Based on soft existing soil conditions encountered at the planned memorial site, GeoCapitol’s staff worked with the structural engineer and the contractor, Forrester Construction, to develop a cost-effective solution to support the memorial on the existing fill soils. Both shallow and deep foundations were evaluated for support of the Memorial and associated elements.
