GeoCapitol provided geotechnical engineering services for redeveloping an existing shopping center in Ward 8 to construct a 6-story mixed-use building with 195 residential units, 5,000 SF of retail space, and one-level of below grade parking. Subsurface conditions were investigated by drilling a total of four test borings in the proposed building area.
GeoCapitol performed the engineering analysis including evaluating multiple foundation options. Spread footings supported by soils improved with aggregate piers was recommended because the conventional spread footing foundations bearing directly upon the existing fill would be unacceptable for the proposed construction. Upon completion of the aggregate pier installation, conventional spread foundations can be constructed in accordance with commonly accepted methods. GeoCapitol provided additional design recommendations for lower floor slabs on grade, lateral earth pressures and subdrainage, temporary construction dewatering, permanent subdrainage, and earthwork.
